22nd March - World Water Day

Drops for Niger is an educational campaign carried out by UNICEF that seeks to show the importance of water as a basic human right to be respected an valued, as well as its relation to child survival. It also teaches us about the situation in one of the poorest countries in the world, where only 46% of the population has access to drinking water.

To help UNICEF the IES Goya decided to carry out different acts of solidarity , among which we have to highlight our badges workshop. The students of 2ºBachiller Artes designed 24 different badges , which we later made and sold among students. The sudents of 1st year ESO also made lots of wonderful bracelets , which sold really well. The video "Drops" , one of the educational tools provided by UNICEF, was also projected in our main hall at breaktime. On the whole , it was a great experience in which a great amount of students and teachers got involved. I must say this is not the first time we try to support UNICEF . We are very happy to contribute to their mission.

International Women´s Day

Today we have celebrated the International Women´s Day at school. One of the acts which took place at break time was the projection of this video. I must say it was our language assistant , Laura Krebs , the one who found this wonderful video file on Youtube. Some of our students have already seen this video in class. And probably most of you managed to see it this morning. However, I decided to upload it just in case you missed it. Enjoy it .

International School Day of Peace

Just as every year our school celebrates the International Day of Peace on the 30th January. In this ocassion we want to commemorate Sadako Sasaki´story, a Japanese girl who was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6 , 1945 near her home in Hiroshima , Japan.
Sadako got very ill a few years later. Her best friend encouraged Sadako to fold 1,000 cranes , in reference to the ancient Japanese story that promises that anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish .
At break time , next Wednesday and Thursday , our students will be given the chance to fold their own paper cranes. A few desks will be placed in the main hall of our school and and tuition will be provided for anyone who wants to have a go at it. Some students have already been working on this . That´s why you will see a great display of coloured paper cranes and a picture of Sadako on one of the walls of the school entrance hall. Our AIM is to fold 1,000 cranes and send them to Hiroshima with our deepest wish for PEACE.

Watch this video and learn the story of Sadako. Do you think she managed to fold 1,000 paper cranes ?

One more thing !! White ribbons and a new pocket calendar for 2011 will be distributed among students at break time next Thursday. Hope you enjoy it all !!

This is the BBC

A few days ago some of you enjoyed the wonderful play performed by Moving On Theatre Company called "This is the BBC".

I must say that this is the fifth time that we have had the same company in our school and once again the play was very entertainning and the actors very professional.

Every year we find the experience very motivating as students really get to understand what is going on.The children thoroughly enjoy their time and have a good laugh , especially those who are asked to join the actors on stage. Don´t you agree? Watch the video and see what you think ...

If you want to contact the company ,here is their internet address http://www.movingonsl.com/

Mystery Literature Week : Tales of Horror and Vampires

This week our school has been dedicated to a horrifying event: we have been celebrating the second edition of the Mystery Literature Week. This year it has been completely dedicated to vampires.

Lots of activities have taken place throughout the week. Actually, it is a pleasure to say that there has been an awful lot of both teachers and students involved in making this lovely project work.
Our school library, which has been decorated for the occassion, has been the meeting point where tales of horror have been read to students in 4 different languages: Spanish, English, French and German. Students have produced several posters about vampires after studying in depth this myth throughout history. All of them have been nicely displayed in the school main hall.
Two films have been shown to older students in our Assembly Hall and our students of Art have decorated the building with wonderful handmade paper work whcih look really spooky along the main staircase.
Congratulations to everybody. Great job !!
