Wash Your Hands, please !

  15 October is the Global Handwashing Day. UNICEF celebrates the date to foster a culture of clean hands and to raise awareness about the benefits of washing our hands with soap.

Handwashing with soap plays an important role in child survival and health all over the world, especially in underdeveloped countries.

Hands are the most exposed parts of our body , that´s why we need to wash them often and do it well.

The good news is that it is something easy to do.

The bad news is that we don´t wash our hands often enough and even if we do so , we don´t usually do it well.

At our school we wanted to join the campaign .

Our students of 1st year ESO with the help of their English teachers talked about the importance of keeping germs away  to stay healthy.

We also decorated a board in the corridor to remind everybody of the benefits of such an easy habit.

Goodbye to our French and English language assistants

After a year of interesting lessons, we must say goodbye to our language assistants.

The Race to the South Pole

School exchange with RGS Worcester (2)

Well , everything went ever so well .....

 We are so happy with how things turned out ....

The host families were exceptional - our children really felt at home. We have to say that all of them behaved extremely well.

The only thing that was not so good was the weather . We had lots of snow during the weekend !

We also have to thank the headmaster of the school and especially all the teachers from the Spanish Department , who made our stay very pleasant.

There was a little bit of everything , as you can see: the students attended some lessons at school and experienced how a day in a British school is ( even  the canteen meals !! )

We visited London - the capital of the country .

There we  saw the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace , climbed up the lions in Trafalgar Square , went shopping in Covent Garden , went mad at the M&Ms shop in Leicester Square , took a look through the gate of Downing Street , took loads of pictures of the Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament and finally went up The London Eye .


It was great , although it was absolutely freezing cold !!! Well , at least it did not rain.

  

Sealife Centre, Birmingham

 In Birmingham we paid a visit to the Sealife Centre , a wonderful aquarium in one of the nicest areas of the city centre.

 Then all of us enjoyed shopping in Birmingham famous Bullring , much more than a mall ! Glorious !!!!

At Christ Church in Oxford

And we also visited the lovely city of Oxford , where we had an exceptional guide. Our school , IES Goya, has a student at Oxford University right now : Uxue Rambla .

She showed us around and told our students all the funny little stories about the life of university students : college parties , lessons, exams and all kind of university rituals.

School Exchange with RGS Worcester

We are about to leave ....

Next Monday 18 March 22 of our 3rd , 4th year ESO and 1st year Bach students  together with two teachers of the English Department will be travelling to England on a school exchange with  RGS Worcester , which our school has been running for 7 years now and which  has proved to be a really successful initiative up to the present.

RGS was originally founded in Worcester around 685 by Bishop Bosel, making it the fifth oldest school in the United Kingdom and the sixth oldest in the world. In 1265, the first written reference to the school appears, when Walter of Cantelupe, Bishop of Worcester, appointed four chaplains to go out to teach in the school, rather than teaching from within the Precincts of the Cathedral.

Fast forward to 1561, when the school received its first Royal Charter, which ensured that the school was endowed permanently with a governing body known as the Six Masters. A second Royal Charter was granted in 1843 by Queen Victoria, with the tile of 'Royal' being conferred in 1869. 

 Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, also visited the school in 1961, providing a neat symmetry of royal visits.

In 2007, RGS merged with the girls-only Alice Ottley School, which has also been a landmark within the city for well over 100 years.

We are ever so excited. Hopefully everything will come out really well - partners are looking forward to meeting each other, though lots of chatting has already been going on  ....

International School Day of Peace

Just as every year our school celebrates the International Day of Peace on the 30th January. In this ocassion we want to commemorate Sadako Sasaki´story, a Japanese girl who was 2 years old when the atomic bomb was dropped on August 6 , 1945 near her home in Hiroshima , Japan.

Sadako got very ill a few years later. Her best friend encouraged Sadako to fold 1,000 cranes , in reference to the ancient Japanese story that promises that anyone who folds 1,000 origami cranes will be granted a wish .

At break time , next Wednesday and Thursday , our students will be given the chance to fold their own paper cranes. A few desks will be placed in the main hall of our school and and tuition will be provided for anyone who wants to have a go at it. Some students have already been working on this . That´s why you will see a great display of coloured paper cranes and a picture of Sadako on one of the walls of the school entrance hall. Our AIM is to fold 1,000 cranes and send them to Hiroshima with our deepest wish for PEACE.

One more thing !! White ribbons and a new pocket calendar for 2011 will be distributed among students at break time next Thursday. Hope you enjoy it all !!

Model Exhibition

Our students of 1st year ESO C organized an exhibition at our school to let their schoolmates enjoy the wonderful models they made of the favourite room in their house.

To make the models they used shoe boxes and lots of imagination.

Mystery Literature Week : Tales of Horror and Vampires

This week our school has been dedicated to a horrifying event: we have been celebrating the second edition of the Mystery Literature Week. This year it has been completely dedicated to vampires.

Lots of activities have taken place throughout the week. Actually, it is a pleasure to say that there has been an awful lot of both teachers and students involved in making this lovely project work.

Our school library, which has been decorated for the occassion, has been the meeting point where tales of horror have been read to students in 4 different languages: Spanish, English, French and German. Students have produced several posters about vampires after studying in depth this myth throughout history. All of them have been nicely displayed in the school main hall.

Two films have been shown to older students in our Assembly Hall and our students of Art have decorated the building with wonderful handmade paper work whcih look really spooky along the main staircase.

Congratulations to everybody. Great job !!

Goodbye to our language assisstant , Adrian Kennedy

Last May we had to say goodbye to our language assisstant Adrian Kennedy. It was ever so sad !! May this little video pay a tribute to his wonderful work at school.
