HAPPY THANKSGIVING

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is known today as one of the first Thanksgiving celebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. But it was not unitl 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that  President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a National Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.

SPOOKY STORIES FROM DOWN UNDER

For the last two days our students of 3rd year ESO have attended several sessions of spooky ghost stories retold from Australian folklore by two native speakers.

The goal of this storytelling activity focused on both improving the students' learning process and making them have fun.

Although ghost stories play on fears, they also play upon the imagination, and can be a wonderful form of entertainment and inspiration.

These spooky stories from Down Under close our Mystery and Horror Literature Week.

HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

Between  fall and winter, life and death, Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition.
It is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic Festival of Samhain, when people would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off roaming ghosts.

EXCHANGE WITH THE RGS WORCESTER

One more year, our students travelled to England last March on an exchange with the RGS Worcester.

There, our 16 students experienced a wide range of visits to Oxford, London and Birmingham.  The British host families really made our students  feel at home and organized exciting weekend activities for them , which everyone enjoyed.

Time flies and last Tuesday we had to say goodbye to our English partners, who visited us from the 5th to the 12th April. We were really glad to welcome our English partners from Worcester in our ninth year working together.

The English students  also enjoyed a week full of activities and visits. The weather was also quite nice, maybe a bit windy - you know what Zaragoza is like!

The Spanish families were ever so helpful and  made things really easy for the British children.

We are delighted that things went on so well. Actually, we know that quite a few students are planning to meet again during  the summer. Isn´t that brilliant?

Looking forward to the tenth anniversary next year !!

My daughter, Malala : TED TALK

International Women´s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world. It is the day in which women are recognized for their achievements, without regards to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.

International Women´s Day first emerged from the activities of labour movements at the turn of the 20th century in North America and across Europe.Since those early years, International Women´s Day has assumed a new dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike.

Today, it is a day to reflect on progress made, to call for a change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their communities and countries. One of them is Malala Yousafzai.

In patriarchal societies, men hold the position of power in the family unit, in the workplace, in the government. Women must be quiet, humble and submissive. There is the fear that educated girls will make their own decisions and consequently their own choices. Many men in those male-dominated societies support and love their daughters but their stories are rarely told. Many Afghan families want their daughters to go to school, but poverty and tradition, along with the Taliban, make this a practical impossibility.
The message of education that Ziauddin Yousafzai encouraged in his daughter was crucial. The love and understanding between this father and his daughter has meant a new hope for girls and women everywhere.

Listen to Malala´s father :  food for thought

Jordi Roca and Neil Harbisson - "The Dish Player"

Magic in the kitchen and in the musical chords, but also in the colour palette. Such diverse worlds are about to merge thanks to  Jordi Roca and Neil Harbisson.

The world´s best chef and the "first cyborg" in the world have invented "the dish player" to translate each flavour into music.  Continue reading

In Metropoli Magazine Jordi tried to explain what a dish player is : "It is a sort of phonograph that instead of a needle has a sensor like the one fitted to Neil´s head, capable of turning colours into sound"

Who is Neil Harbisson ?

Born with the inability to see color, Neil Harbisson wears a prosthetic device  that allows him to hear the spectrum, even those colors beyond the range of human sight.

His unique experience of color until he met cyberneticist Adam Montandon at a college lecture, was strictly black-and-white. By working with Montandon, and later with Peter Kese, Harbisson helped design a lightweight eyepiece that he wears on his forehead that transposes the light frequencies of color  into sound frequencies.

Watch the video and learn more about him.
